Moonwalkers is a 50-minute immersive experience co-created and narrated by Tom Hanks, built from thousands of NASA never seen before images. The exhibition focuses on the Apollo missions and the current Artemis programme, with interviews with active astronauts that give it a perspective that feels as much about the future as the past.
Price child: Free entrance
This special show was co-created by Tom Hanks. Moonwalkers is a journey through the Apollo missions and humanity’s first walk on the Moon. From the moment the show begins, hundreds of NASA archival images fill every surface of the main hall simultaneously. The images were individually restored by space photography expert Andy Saunders, bringing out details that were invisible in the original prints.Β
Tom Hanks narrates about the legendary Apollo missions and the current Artemis programme, the narration offers a perspective that is both personal and insightful. The show is in English with Dutch subtitles.
Upon arrival in the building you will scan your tickets at the entrance gates and put your belongings in the lockers. The first part of the experience is a short exhibition about the Westergas terrain, its history and how it was transformed into the cultural parc of Amsterdam.Β
After the introduction, you will enter the main room. The first tings you will see is the industrial details (brick, big storage cylinders) and the count down for the show.
You can choose to walk around, sit on the stools (or ground), stand at the high platform all the way in the back, lay down or just stand still in one of the many side rooms. Itβs completely up to you!
After the show you will not look at the moon (and Tom Hanks) the same way again.
Nobody expects a show about the Moon to make them emotional, but the Moonwalkers certainly did.Β
Thousands of images filled every wall: from inside the control room, the moon and from the streets. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Tom Hanks did a magnificent job in transporting us to that historic day.Β
We recommend walking around and sitting in every room at least for a couple of minutes. Since different images are projected in every room, in that way you get more out of the experience. The show is impressive on the platform since you are seeing it from above and it feels more intimate in the small projection rooms.Β
The visit went smoothly, we used the free lockers, there were no queues and there was enough space for everyone to seat, walk and lay. The duration of the show is about 50 minutes, so itβs like seeing a documentary in a immersive space.
Go to Moonwalkers if you are a space enthusiast, immersive and digital art fan or are just looking to do something different in the city!
