From Vermeer to Van Gogh

Two art shows, one extraordinary building and 325 works by the greatest painters in Dutch history. Fabrique des Lumières takes the art pieces off the museum wall and immerse  you in a unique show with music that shifts from tranquil to fierce as the paintings move around you.

The experience

Upon arrival in the building you will scan your tickets at the entrance gates and put your belongings in the lockers. The first part of the experience is a short exhibition about the Westergas terrain, its history and how it was transformed into the cultural parc of Amsterdam.Β

After the introduction, you will enter the main room. The first tings you will see is the industrial details (brick, big storage cylinders) and the count down for the show.

You can choose to walk around, sit on the stools (or ground), stand at the high platform all the way in the back, lay down or just stand still in one of the many side rooms. It’s completely up to you!

When the show starts the music will slowly build up and every part of the high walls and floor gets filled with colour. You will recognize different artworks like: the starry night, girl with a pearl and the nightwatch.Β

The show is not static. Parts of the painting will move or the background will change. The music adds an extra layer to the dimension, specially since it matches the movements of the paintings.Β

The main show is about 34 minutes long. Afterwards there is also a 14 minutes show of Mondriaan. This show combines his abstract paintings and with his worldwide knownΒ  geometric compositions.

The experience immerses you in alternate reality where color and art are the main characters.

Insider tips ℹ️

  • Read about Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Jan Steen, Rachel Ruysch and Mondriaan. It will not only help you to understand the paintings better, but also to connect in a deeper level with what you are seeing.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. There are enough seats, but maybe you want to lay down, or sit in the floor and lean on the wall.
  • Check exactly how late the show is. Fabrique rotates the different exhibitions during the day, if you don’t read well, you might book a different show that you intended.
  • Download the app. It shows all the paintings of the show.https://www.fabrique-lumieres.com/en/visit/mobile-app

What is included βœ…

The highlights 🀩

  • A new way of seeing art. We are all used to see paintings on a wall. This new format allows you to not only feel part of the art, but also make up your own interpretation in combination with the music.Β
  • The different rooms. I was expecting to only walk around, but ended up sitting, standing and laying on the floor thanks to the diverse “environments”.Β Β
  • The music. Every song and composition are carefully chosen. It surely helped me to feel a certain way: relaxed, inspired.
  • The location. The Westergasfabriek terrain feels as a different version of the city. Surrounded by trees and trendy restaurants. The ideal place to walk, sit and get inspired by art.

Our 4.7 rating ⭐️

There are other art projection experiences in Amsterdam, but Fabrique des Lumières was the first and the best in our opinion. The image quality is sharper, the space is big, and as visitors we are allowed to experience the show how we want.

During the exhibition we were able to walk, stand on the platform at the back, and lay down on the floor in the mirror room. Ideal for anyone who finds it hard to stand still for more than ten minutes.

It’s worth it to stay all the way to the end, the Mondriaan show was short, but surprising and as the name says it: very colorful.

The visit went smoothly, there were no queues and enough space for everyone to enjoy. It was great to have free lockers.

The price/quality ratio is strong. The price is lower then most museums and Fabrique des Lumieres has different exhibitions often, so you can always find something new!

Visit Fabrique des Lumieres if you are an art-, culture-, and immersive media lover or if you are looking for a date idea that doesn’t involve another canal cruise.
